Top 5: Binge-Worthy T.V. Shows
Game of Thrones
Winter is coming! This drama series was developed from George R.R. Martin’s book series “A Song of Ice and Fire”. This medieval drama traps you inside a beautiful chaotic blend of fantasy, religion, sex, power, battles, and love. The last season airs April 2019.
All American
California Love! This drama series is a narrative that has longevity in the black culture. A phenomenal football player from Compton switches high schools to play for a school in Beverly Hills. Besides the culture shock, he also deals with the responsibility of “saving” his hometown from complacent mentalities and gang violence. On top of getting to know his new team, making friends, making money, he is constantly finding out new truths about his past.
Schitt’s Creek
This comedy is about a rich white family that loses everything and are forced to figure it out in small town called Schitt’s Creek. The show is full of smart, quick-wit moments from characters that represent everything from bi-sexual men to a self-absorbed mayor. The family deals with a town of people they could really care less about but genuinely need. (Also, you will love the mother’s unrecognizable/made-up accent lol)
Fam
The plot of this comedy series centers around a blended family-to-be. A black man engaged to a white woman who gets caught lying about her family. On top of that, her younger sister moves in and disrupts everything. It’s refreshing to see a narrative where the black lead comes from a happy two parent household and the white woman is the one whose past breaks through to the present. The show is funny and very relatable. I’m ready to see them tackle a big issue like racism. The writers can really play with the characters and make it a teachable moment for the unexpected.
One Day at a Time
Watch this show and you’re going to wish this Cuban family lived next to you! Netflix, got it right this time. This show is about a single mom (Army vet, nurse, and overall superwoman) raising her lesbian daughter and handsome Papito. The live-in grandmother is the hips-swaying, outspoken, coffee making matriarch you will love to watch. This family, along with their landlord, are trying to figure out life just one day at a time.
