Review: Chris Rock's Netflix Special "Tamborine"
Chris Rock is simply brilliant. His Netflix comedy special, Tamborine, is a movement towards holistic cultural-consciousness. He fork-feeds you knowledge. It’s full of commentary on black realism, police brutality, weak educational system, fast women, the cost of love, and how to successfully raise a black child. This special is worth your time.
He shines the light on cops not being paid enough. While simultaneously highlighting the fact ‘you get what you pay for’. Chris Rock tests our boundaries with ease. What would happened if we lived in a country with true equality? What if an equal amount of white kids died per year as black kids? What if civil rights activists were consistently chanting in support of white victims. Imagine. True equality in all forms and fashion is the ultimate goal, right?
Rock tackles education eloquently and blatantly. He endorses bullies in school stating that it provides a well-rounded education. As an educator, I love the education segment of his stand-up. It’s necessary for the culture. He presents the notion of a black high school, a HBHS (Historically Black High School) so to speak. He convinces his audience to consider the possible elective courses such as black history class, or a ‘how to survive in a world of white people’ class. Rock’s delivery is powerful, poignant, and purposeful. His education segment is hands down my favorite part of the special.
Rock ends his special with valid relationship advice. He touches on the fact that due to social media we’re unable to miss anyone in 2018. He presents his porn conspiracy theory. Rock also informs the audience of the power of a woman’s mind. I appreciate his transparency in how divorce led to his realization that he finally ‘made it’. Men will appreciate his testimony of being ignored as a “dick carrying member of society”. The classic ending is the 2018 slogan of the year, “I want peace more than I want pussy”.
