Chance The Rapper's Lesson on Loyalty
Chatham neighborhood, near 79th street, in Chicago rooted a valuable resource to hip-hop. Chance The Rapper not only blesses us with his lyrics but he’s an activist and philanthropist. He’s the “American dream” personified. His Tupac-way of thinking, feeling, executing and connecting is unprecedented within his generation. He continues to teach fellow black and creative brethren the dynamic meaning of loyalty.
Always dedicated to showering his city of Chicago with love, Chance remains loyal to his home. He reminisces about growing up in Chicago, in a way that makes you fall in love with it. Chance also talks about what’s systemically wrong in Chicago and highlights what’s nostalgically right about it as well. His investment in maintaining a fair view of a stereotypically horrific city has become his mantra. His courage to remain outspoken should make us question ourselves…what am I doing to help my city? What am I doing to stay true to myself and where (or what) I came from? Granted…we all can’t give millions like Chance but we can give our voice, our creativity, and our time.
Integrity and evolving is at the core of who he is. He’s devoted to keeping that a priority in various aspects of his life/career. Staying an independent artist and changing the rules to the Grammy nominations criteria in 2016 is only a glimpse of his genius. If you’re not sure what loyalty looks like or sounds like do yourself a favor and listen to his music, listen to his growth and vulnerability. Chance has and continues to “speak to God in public”. He’s transparent about his relationship with the Lord and his perseverance in overcoming obstacles. YouTube a few of his interviews, feel the frequencies that his energy releases with every anecdote. Follow his movements as he talks with his hands to show you how he feels and why. Chance The Rapper is a continuous example that loyalty is being honest with yourself while making people feel comfortable enough to do the same.
