Mya On 20+ Years In The Business, Health, and How Music Affects The Body

Mya has a career that started decades ago. She’s known for showing us what a sexy version of honesty sounds like. The D.C native began singing at an early age. Growing up in a musical household, she grew up hearing the greatest. Outside of legendary artists from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s…she grew up listening to the smooth sounds of her dad’s band.

Confiding to a musical family that your dream is to be an entertainer can be intimidating. When she realized her talent, she knew she would need courage to talk to a particular person. “My mother gave me the confidence to sing in front of my father, who’s the singer of the family. Both of my parents were very supportive with what I wanted to do in the entertainment industry….which was originally broadway”.

Since Mya’s father was a jazz artist he naturally didn’t want her in the music business. However, once he noticed her dedication he was proud of the decision she made. As her passion developed, her father was still making music and traveling. She explains, “I grew up with so many jam sessions in the house…music is in our make up, our DNA”. Mya reminisced that she “remembers vinyl records playing and I’m just singing and dancing up a storm! Then my dad’s band would play. Being around live instruments made me feel something. I couldn’t articulate it back then but I knew what it was”.

The 20 year anniversary of her debut album was celebrated last year. Back in 98’ Mya was a teenager and wasn’t necessarily looking decades into her future. Granted, she knew she’d always be making music due to the instrumental structure of her upbringing. Music has the sweet capability to transcend time and tap directly into your soul. “Music is an universal language. It powerfully assists in chakra healing. It assist in balancing your emotional and physical state. Each chakra holds a vibrational frequency. Also, when balanced they resonate at the same frequency as the music scale. Music is very deep, it does something to the soul.”

In addition to working on the spiritual/emotional aspect of living, musically throughout the years, she also adapted healthy eating. The ageless, and ever-glowing Mya has been vegan for almost as long as her career. Constantly asked, “what’s your secret”? She giggles and responds, “there is no secret. I really seen a change and improvement in my skin, life, clarity, sleep, and creativity when I went vegan”.

Now Mya connects with her fan through her health challenges. Mya holds challenges where contestants can choose between the following options: vegan, raw vegan, alkaline vegan, and juicing. Then the contestant notates what they eat and drink daily. At the end of the challenge period, Mya chooses a winner that receives a gift and the opportunity to hangout with her. Mya explains that it’s a rewarding experience to see a simple challenge change people’s lives. “Some of the contestants have went on to become trainers, get other family members involved and really adopted this as a lifestyle”.

While living her best life she continues to prioritize making people feel good from the inside out. Making new music, touring, and her health challenges are just a few ways she connects with her fans. Mya is a guiding light, an example of what rejuvenation looks like in real time.
