Joss Stone Talks Authenticity, Aspirations, and Her Creative Process
As we all know soul music sees no color or ethnicity. Obsessed with Aretha Franklin as a young teen (as if there’s anyone better to be obsessed with then the Queen of Soul) Joss Stone indulged head first in soul music. The heart, the rhythm, and the message of the music is what captured her attention.
When asked if she always knew if singing/entertaining was what she wanted to do with her life she humbly answers, “It’s not really what I want to do with my life, it’s just what I enjoy doing right now. I want to do lots with my life, this is just one of many things I plan to do.” Aspirations, dreams and passions have no age limit. Nurturing, investing, and cherishing one’s dreams and passions is the key to success; full fulfillment in your life’s path.
Having already blessed the stage alongside some of the greats like James Brown, Gladys Knight, Mick Jagger, Smokey Robinson, Blondie, and Melissa Etheridge she has surpassed any fear of stage fright. She only fears death. We’re all thrown some of life’s greatest obstacles but your attitude during those obstacles is what creates character. Her approach to music has always been authentic and liberating which is why she lives by the mantra of being comfortable in your skin and if you want something bad enough, goes after it!
Any woman is simply beautiful “when she is happy”. Anyone who emulates others will only cause themselves “sadness and more insecurity. Just be yourself. There is only one you and you’re unique”. Authenticity and individuality is unfortunately rare these days, yet so instrumentally in ultimate goal of love and happiness.
Stone’s fans love the fact that she’s a free spirit. When it comes to her songwriting, “I just write down what I think and then I sing it. The process is simply writing down the first thought that comes into my head.” While she’s on the road touring she’s been listening to people she’s met on the road, “like Bholoja and Bongeziwe or Nitin Sawhney.” Her fans can expect adventures from her Total World Tour; just stay tuned on her Facebook page!
